Have you been putting off the dreaded trip to the DMV out in town to get a North Carolina REAL ID? Long lines are now a thing of the past, thanks to a new agreement between Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles, who have partnered to ease the process by providing a full-service RV on base.
A REAL ID is a single form of identification that meets higher security standards. Although REAL IDs are not currently mandatory, by May 3, 2023 it will be a requirement to travel on commercial airlines and access federal facilities including military bases or nuclear power plants without a secondary form of approved identification.
Personnel are now able to obtain a North Carolina REAL ID at the DMV RV, located in the parking lot south of the Harriotte B. Smith Library near the corner of Holcomb Blvd. and Dogwood Street. Appointments are required and will be available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the first full week of each month from 8 to 11 a.m. and 12 to 5 p.m. Individuals can schedule an appointment online at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0f4ea8ae2da5fd0-real. Appointments should take approximately 20 minutes.
Several establishing documents will be required at your appointment.
This list can also be downloaded at https://go.usa.gov/xnhjW.
The cost for a REAL ID is the same as a regular or duplicate driver license/ID. However, if you already have a valid driver license or ID and want to upgrade for a REAL ID, the fee is $13. All fees can be paid via a cash, check, credit or debit card. If you have questions about fees, please visit https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/fees/?s=LF.
After you have submitted your documentation, taken a new photo and paid the fee, your REAL ID will be mailed to you in approximately 15-20 days.
