Beirut Memorial wall closes for repairs
7 Apr 2023

The Beirut Memorial wall will be closed for water damage repairs from Monday, April 10 until late July.

The project will repair and adjust the wall’s granite panels. Over the course of the repairs, the Beirut Memorial and the small parking lot adjacent to it will be closed to the public. The rest of the Lejeune Memorial Gardens, however, will remain open.

“The Beirut Memorial is such a special place for this community to come and remember those neighbors, friends and loved ones we lost on October 23, 1983,” said Sammy Phillips, Jacksonville’s Mayor. “The tragic bombing in Lebanon shook this community to its core and we have not forgotten the sacrifice that these service members made. We are so appreciative of our local military and the timely repairs being made to the memorial. We look forward to seeing the finished work expected to be completed in time for the 40th anniversary observance this fall where we will once again gather together in remembrance.”

The Beirut Memorial wall was built as a tribute to the 273 Marines killed in Lebanon and Grenada on Oct. 23, 1983. For more information about the Beirut Memorial, visit https://jacksonvillenc.gov/585/Beirut-Memorial-Grove.
