MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - James Bradley of Chevy Chase, Md., a junior at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, inserts a small light into an endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker nest of Mile Hammock Bay Road on July 22. These finicky, high-maintenance birds once thrived in the pine forests stretching as far west as Texas, as far north as New Jersey and as far south as Florida, but changes in land use and the expansion of commercialized civilization have deprived them of critical habitats.
