MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -This tree is a live oak or in scientific terms a Qercus Virginiana and is believed to be the oldest tree here, according to the Lejeune history. It was estimated to be 385-years-old in 1976, which means it would be about 414-years-old now. The tree was dedicated as the Marine Corps Base Bicentennial Tree in recognition of the enduring spirit of freedom on the 200th anniversary of American independence. This is a fitting description of the tree because it has survived the lumber industry, the building of Camp Lejeune and the early plantations that occupied the area (Official U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl.
