MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - A long leaf pine tree, home to a family of endangered Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, stands off Mile Hammock Bay Road on July 22. These woodpeckers are finicky, high-maintenance birds once thrived in the pine forests stretching as far west as Texas, as far north as New Jersey and as far south as Florida, but changes in land use and the expansion of commercialized civilization have deprived them of critical habitats.
