The live oak, or quercus virginiana, on McHugh Boulevard was dedicated as the Bicentennial Tree, July 4, 1976, in commemoration of the nation's 200th anniversary. At the time, it was estimated to be 385 years old, making it about 420 years old today. The Bicentennial Tree was the fourth stop on the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Self-Guided Tour, but the program was discontinued about two years ago.
