Alma Bernice Clark Gravely, widow of Vice Adm. Samuel L. Gravely, addresses thousands of service members, families and friends at the commissioning ceremony of the USS Gravely at the State Ports in Wilmington, N.C., Nov. 20. Alma is the sponsor of the ship, which was named after her late husband who was a man of ‘firsts’: the first African-American to command a U.S. Navy warship, first to command a navy warship in combat, first to be promoted to flag rank, first to rise to the rank of vice admiral and the first to command a U.S. fleet.
