Sewer Line Break Results in Wastewater Spill Along Brewster Blvd; New River Breached
18 Aug 2024

At 6:40 p.m., Aug 17, personnel from the Public Works Division were notified of a forcemain sewer line break along Brewster Blvd near the Stone Street intersection. During repairs, the flow from a lift station along this line was diverted to an open ditch to prevent the release to surface waters. In the early morning hours of Aug 18, the wastewater flow volumes exceeded the capacity of the TT99 wet well and surrounding containment which led to a breach of approximately 54,000 gallons into the New River.

Vacuum trucks were used to recover and remove the excess wastewater and lime was applied to the affected area. The break in the water main was repaired this morning at 2:15 a.m.

Surface water samples at the spill site will be taken by the base in coordination with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality was notified of the event yesterday and is reviewing the matter.
