MCB CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- At approximately 4:45 p.m. yesterday, personnel from the Camp Lejeune Public Works Division were conducting routine operations to lower the level of the Camp Lejeune landfill leachate pond, when an isolation valve failed, causing the release of leachate into the sanitary sewer system.
The rapid influx from the landfill leachate pond caused a wastewater lift station to overflow and an estimated 12,000 gallons of mostly leachate and untreated wastewater reached Bearhead Creek in the White Oak River Basin. The lift station resumed normal operations at approximately 6:45 p.m. yesterday. Lime was applied to the affected areas around the lift station.
Base personnel completed valve repairs this morning, are currently taking water samples up and downstream of the site and are evaluating any possible follow-on actions.
The North Carolina Division of Water Resources was notified of the event today and is reviewing the matter.
