MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE -- Change is coming to the Corps, including the decision to go sleeves up while wearing the desert utility uniform in garrison, March 9.
The commandant’s decision in 2011 to go sleeves down with the desert utility uniform has been a topic of discussion among Marines. The decision to bring back the sleeves up policy was addressed to noncommissioned officers throughout the Corps, in a letter from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Feb. 26.
“I can’t tell you how many times we have been asked the persistent question ‘Commandant, are we ever going to return to sleeves up?’ I’ve thought a lot about this over the past two and a half years; I realize that it’s important to you. Sleeves up clearly and visually sets us apart. We hear you Marines!” said Gen. James F. Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps.
Marines are proud of their history and tradition and now they have one more reason to walk tall, said Sgt. Maj. Ernest K. Hoopii, Marine Corps Installations East- Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune sergeant major.
“Marines are known for looking sharp in any uniform and are particularly proud of having their sleeves rolled up and looking good,” said Hoopii. “It’s another thing that sets us apart from the other services.”
For some Marines, it’s an opportunity to participate in a small piece of the Marine Corps they never knew.
“That’s the way my father did it, the way my NCOs did it and now I will be able to be a part of that tradition,” said Pfc. Michael Erickson, a field wireman with 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment. “It seems like they are bringing a small piece of the ‘old Corps’ back, and it’s exciting to be a part of that.”
With new changes coming to the Corps, Marines will once again adapt and overcome.
“There are a lot of things Marines can expect while serving in our Corps, and one of them will always be change,” said Hoopii.
