Demo Day makes golfers drive longer, swing better

More than 100 service members, retired military and family members of all ages swung their clubs during the Demo Day at the Paradise Point Golf Course driving range aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, March 9.

Five golf club manufacturing companies with Professional Golf Association of America players representing each company displayed various golf clubs to get the participants a better swing, longer drive and offer advice from years of experience.

The vendors featured were TaylorMade, Titleist, Callaway, Cleveland Golf and Srixon.

The vendors have started new, two-year club designs, which feature better technology.

“You don’t want a Phillips head screw driver for a flat head screw. It’s not going to work,” said John R. Johnson, Paradise Point Golf Course head golf professional with more than 20 years of golf experience. “The vendors make sure you have the right equipment in your hand so you have the best time you can have when you play. This is a great opportunity for the players to see what’s new in golf equipment and get information that will really help them in the short and long term game.”

From the youngest child who’s swinging a club for the first time to the most experienced golfer, the vendors fitted each person which iron, golf club with an iron head, to use for a longer drive, tweaked stances for a more natural swing and explained the differences in designs for different scenarios out on the green.

“The experience is really coming out and trying new things to better your game and having fun while you do it,” Johnson said. “This is the first Demo Day since I’ve started working here, but I would like have to have two Demo Day’s a year.”

The Demo Day’s open forum style eased newer players into getting comfortable with the clubs and working on their technique.

“We have a passion for the game,” said Darrell S. Posey, a TaylorMade vendor with more than 16 years of golf experience. “We love to come out and help anyone interested in golf to give them a better game experience. These Demo Days really afford us the chance to have one-on-one time with the players and make sure they have the best equipment for when they go out for a few rounds.”

The driving range was set up with markers at 50, 75, 100 and 150 yards.

The players easily saw the results of the club they used with the help of the markers.

“Being able to bridge the gap from a being a good player to a better player is what drives our sport and keeps that competitive edge we love to see,” Posey said.
