The 2d Marine Division Commanding General's Cup competition is scheduled to kick off Feb. 23, at the French Creek Fitness Center.

This will initiate a series of five events that will include basketball, soccer, one-pitch softball, four-man beach volleyball and a flag football tournament.

"The first event is scheduled to start Feb. 23, with an all-day event of basketball," said Staff Sgt. Roger N. Sylvain from Fort Kent, Maine, and the special services officer for 2d Marine Division here.  "After that the events are planned one per month, but due to the high operational tempo of the Division, it's a tentative schedule."

All units within the Division at the regimental and battalion headquarters/battery level are eligible for participation in the CG's Cup competition.  Units are allowed a maximum of two teams per event, according to Sylvain.

Trophies will be presented to the top three teams of each event and the overall winner will be determined by a point system.  First through fifth place will receive the following points of 25, 20, 15, 10, and five per event.

"For the first and second place teams per event, winning teams will receive a large trophy to place in the respective unit areas," said Sylvain.  "The top three teams per event will all receive individual trophies presented by the Division commanding general."

In order to promote competitive spirit and esprit de corps throughout the Division... emphasis of this competition will be placed on team events, according to Division Bulletin 1710.

"It's a morale builder," said Sylvain.  "Unit cohesion achieved through competitive games has really emphasized a sense of camaraderie in the Division in the past and that is what we still strive for today."
