Camp Lejeune to hold major exercise to test emergency response capabilities this week

March 31, 2014

SHARE

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune will conduct Exercise Urgent Response from April 1 through 3 to test the base's ability to respond to a crisis situation and review lockdown procedures while simultaneously working with multiple agencies including the Naval Criminal Investigative Services' Carolinas Field Office, Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, and several tenant commands, including a large portion of the II Marine Expeditionary Force.

The main scenario will involve an active-shooter at a tenant command promotion ceremony at Hospital Point aboard MCB Camp Lejeune on Thursday, April 3.

The base conducts a similar emergency response drill annually.  The exercise will help to identify gaps in current all-hazards response plans, resource shortfalls and demonstrate the importance of mutual aid agreements with the local community.

In addition to the active-shooter training, the weeklong exercise will include special reaction team hostage negotiation scenarios aimed to push first responders, law enforcement and base officials to the limit.
