MCB CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- As of 12 p.m., Marines Road has re-opened on Camp Lejeune, as well as all other associated road closures. The brush fire that began Tuesday afternoon is 100% contained and has not changed in size. No injuries to personnel or buildings have been reported.
Base firefighters have remained on scene since the fire broke out March 7 and are closely monitoring the fire and weather conditions. With little rain expected over the next few days, installation personnel can expect several days of smoke. Beginning Friday, March 10, the wind is expected to shift from the southeast, which will move smoke over the French Creek and Hadnot Point areas of the installation.
The swift response to contain this fire was due in part to our invaluable community partnerships. Over 100 personnel from Camp Lejeune Fire Department, Base Forestry, eight local volunteer fire departments and officials from the State Forestry Unit assisted in containing the fire.
Fire and Emergency Services personnel will monitor the fire until it is completely extinguished. The Provost Marshal’s Office will ensure roadways on the installation are safe to travel. Should smoke begin to drift across roadways and cause hazardous driving conditions, PMO will close roadways until travel becomes safe again.
Any future updates will be communicated via the installation’s website and social media pages should the fire dictate closures of installation roads in the coming days.
