Lieutenant Colonel Matthew A. Markham Commanding Officer, Weapons Training Battalion
Lieutenant Colonel Markham is from St. Petersburg, Florida and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in February 2000. After commissioning, he attended The Basic School and the Field Artillery Officers Basic Course. His first assignment was with Battery L, 3d Battalion, 10th Marines, where he served as Battalion Liaison Officer, Guns Platoon Commander, and Executive Officer, deploying with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2003.
From July 2004 to July 2007, Captain Markham was assigned to 2D Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company. While there he deployed twice in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM as a Firepower Control Team Leader. Additionally he served as the Assistant Operations Officer. During this tour he was selected to attend the Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS) at Quantico, Virginia.
Upon Completion of EWS Captain Markham was an individual augment at Officer Candidate School and served as a Staff Platoon Commander, before executing orders to 1st Battalion, 10th Marines to fill the Operations Officer Billet.
In December 2008, Captain Markham assumed command of Battery K, 3d Battalion, 10th Marines, and deployed to Operation ENDURING FREEDOM in 2009. At the conclusion of the deployment, he was promoted to Major and served briefly as operations officer.
From September 2010 to July 2011, Major Markham served as the Operations and Executive Officer for African Partnership Station-11, planning and conducting theater security cooperation. During this tour, Major Markham was selected to attend the Marine Corps Command and Staff College at Quantico, Virginia.
Upon completion of Command and Staff in 2012, Major Markham was assigned to Special Operations Directorate at Plans, Policies and Operations at Headquarters Marine Corps, where he served as an action officer and Personnel Recovery Section Head.
From August 2014 to December 2015, Major Markham was assigned to 3d Battalion, 12th Marines, serving as the Assistant Fire Support Coordinator and the Operations Officer. During this tour, Major Markham participated in multiple joint exercises throughout the Pacific. Following this assignment, Major Markham served as the Assistant Operations Officer and Operations Officer for 12th Marines.
In October 2016, he was promoted to his current rank and assigned to Manpower Management at Headquarters Marine Corps where he served as the Enlisted Assignments Section Head.
Lieutenant Colonel Markham has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Truman State University, Kirksville, Missouri and a Master’s Degree in Military Science from Marine Corps University.
Lieutenant Colonel Markham’s personal awards include Meritorious Service Medal (second award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (second award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with “V” (second award), and Combat Action Ribbon.
