Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- A section of Brewster Boulevard aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is scheduled to be closed from Nov. 6 to 11.
The area of Brewster Boulevard between Charles Street, which borders the Paradise Point Golf Course and Barnett Way, near Heroes Manor, is set to close in order to set girders down for the foundation of a bridge along the upcoming base entry road.
It is one of seven bridges being constructed for the new base entry road, a four-lane divided highway system which will ease traffic coming aboard Camp Lejeune.
Workers building the new base entryway will use two cranes to set 114 ft long girders across Brewster Boulevard as a base for the bridge.
The construction will take place during the Veterans Day holiday to minimize impact on traffic. Signage will be placed to notify motorists of alternative routes.
“It’s important to use the detours,” said Navy Lt. Lonny Sleeper, a construction manager with Naval Facilities Engineering Command. “They are there for public safety.”
The detours will lead motorists through Stone Street, Charles Street and Seth Williams Boulevard.
The construction is not expected to affect classes at Heroes Elementary School, however buses may be rerouted.
As the construction of the new base entry road continues, there may be future closures and detours.
“There are going to be a lot of changes coming along that are going to benefit the base in the long run,” said Sleeper.
The construction is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2015.
