Camp Lejeune, New River Air Station to implement REAL ID as Primary Access Credential, Sept. 1
20 Aug 2025

Beginning Monday, Sept. 1, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River will implement the REAL ID Act as the primary credential for unaffiliated personnel seeking access to the installations. This change affects contractors, vendors, suppliers, service providers and visitors—all of whom must continue to be vetted through the Visitor Control Center prior to entry.

“This shift allows us to simplify our access control process while continuing to maintain a secure environment for our Marines, sailors and their families,” said Brig. Gen. Ralph J. Rizzo, Jr., commanding general, Marine Corps Installations East – Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “REAL ID provides a consistent and reliable credential that aligns with Department of Defense policies and nationwide standards.”

While a REAL ID-compliant state-issued driver’s license or identification card will serve as the preferred credential, alternate valid forms of identification may still be used. In those cases, a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) credential or paper pass will be issued. A complete list of acceptable IDs can be found on the installation website.

This transition makes REAL ID the preferred and most efficient access credential. Individuals who already possess a DBIDS card may continue to use it until its expiration. Those who do not have a REAL ID will be credentialed through DBIDS once vetted at the Visitor Center.

The Department of Defense has authorized federal installations to utilize REAL ID in place of DBIDS cards, which reduces reliance on card-printing systems and lowers maintenance costs. However, DBIDS credentials will remain in use for those presenting alternate valid identification or for special circumstances that require them.

Those without a REAL ID should plan ahead, review the list of acceptable alternate IDs and ensure they bring proper documentation to avoid delays at the gate.
