Camp Lejeune urges attendees to take heat precautions for 2026 Fourth of July Celebration

1 Jul 2026 | 1st Lt Kathryn Wisniewski Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is advising all attendees of the 2026 Fourth of July Celebration to take extra precautions due to dangerously high temperatures forecasted for the holiday weekend. Current weather predictions for eastern and central North Carolina indicate triple‑digit temperatures and heat index values that may reach 105–110°F on July 4, 2026, creating conditions that pose significant risks for heat‑related illnesses.

Meteorologists across the region warn this year’s holiday may fall within one of the hottest stretches North Carolina has experienced in years, with extreme heat risk expanding across much of the state.

Heat Advisory Forecasts show the following conditions which significantly increase the likelihood of heat exhaustion and heat stroke:

  • Air temperatures near or above 100°F
  • Heat index values exceeding 105–110°F
  • Little overnight cooling, with early morning lows remaining near 80°F

Camp Lejeune strongly encourages extra caution and considerations for the following populations:

  • Young children, who dehydrate quickly and are less able to regulate body temperature
  • Elderly individuals, who are more susceptible to heat stress
  • Pregnant women
  • People with chronic medical conditions
  • Anyone sensitive to sun exposure or high humidity

To ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration, Camp Lejeune recommends the following:

  • Adjust timelines: Consider arriving later in the afternoon or early evening, when temperatures begin to decline.
  • Wear Heat‑Appropriate Clothing: Choose light‑colored, loose‑fitting clothing. Wear wide‑brimmed hats and UV‑protective sunglasses.
  • Hydrate Properly: Drink water continuously, even before feeling thirsty. Avoid sugary, caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, which accelerate dehydration. Coolers are allowed, and attendees are strongly encouraged to bring plenty of water.
  • Limit Alcohol Consumption: Alcohol increases dehydration risk and reduces the body’s ability to regulate heat. Attendees planning to consume alcohol should do so moderately and alternate with water.
  • Take Cooling Breaks: Seek shade frequently, use cooling stations provided at the event.
  • Attendees are reminded never to leave children or elderly individuals in parked vehicles, even briefly, as interior temperatures can reach lethal levels within minutes.
  • Attendees should watch for Symptoms of Heat‑Related Illness: Dizziness or lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, confusion, hot but dry skin or excessive sweating. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical assistance immediately.

Camp Lejeune will provide the following event safety support:

  • Water and other beverages will be available for purchase through vending machines, the Mobile Exchange and food trucks.
  • Limited cooling areas will be available on site, including the USAA Cooling Tent, VFW Cooling Trailer and USO Trailer. These areas are intended for short cooling breaks and may reach capacity during peak times.
  • On‑site medical teams prepared to respond to heat‑related emergencies

Camp Lejeune remains committed to hosting a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July celebration for all service members, families and community guests. With extreme heat conditions expected, personal responsibility and awareness are essential.
