Retired Lt. Col. Joseph Carpenter with the National Montford Point Marine Association thanks those who donated and supported the establishment of the Montford Point Marine Memorial at a dedication ceremony at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune July 29. Hundreds of attendees, including Montford Point Marines, family members, active duty servicemembers and supporters, gathered to attend the memorial dedication which honored the 20,000 segregated African-American Marines who trained there in the 1940s.
