Sailors stand at attention aboard the Navy missile – guided destroyer, USS Gravely, during her commissioning ceremony at the State Ports in Wilmington, N.C., Nov. 20. The ship was named after the late pioneer, Vice Adm. Samuel Lee Gravely Jr., who was the first African-American in the U.S. Navy to be commissioned, first to serve aboard a fighting ship as an officer, the first to command a Navy ship, the first fleet commander and the first to become a flag officer.
