Update on Main Gate Marine sentry fatality

At approximately 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, a Marine sentry at Camp Lejeune’s Main Gate discharged an M4 rifle, killing another Marine sentry within the Main Gate guard shack.

First responders arrived on the scene minutes later, quickly secured the area and immediately began attempts to revive the victim who suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Fire department and emergency medical personnel arrived shortly thereafter and transferred the victim to Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune where the victim was pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m.

Identification is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The male shooter remains in custody of military law enforcement.  Base officials continue to maintain this event was an isolated incident and not an act of terrorism nor an active shooter event.

The incident remains under investigation by Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
