MCB CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- At 12:57 p.m., June 2, Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Public Works Division personnel were notified of and responded to a wastewater collection system spill on MCB Camp Lejeune along Tarawa Boulevard near wastewater lift station TT47. An estimated 8,000 gallons reached the Northeast Creek, a tributary of the New River in the White Oak River Basin.
Command PWD Utilities collections personnel, including the collection system Operator in Responsible Charge, responding to the notification found collection system blockages causing untreated wastewater to overflow from several manholes. The collections personnel cleared the blockages to restore wastewater flow and stop the spill.
PWD personnel applied lime to the affected area and will “jet” the collection system gravity sewer lines with high‑pressure water near the spill to ensure no further collection system blockages are encountered in the area.
Surface water samples at the spill site will be taken by the command in coordination with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality was notified of the event yesterday and is reviewing the matter. For more information, contact Steven Whited at 910-451-7185.
