Fr. Gianulis is an ordained priest of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, ordained in Denver, Co, on July 13, 1980. He served as a civilian priest in the parishes of Holy Trinity in Salt Lake City, Utah, Annunciation Church in Kansas City, MO, St. Andrew’s Church in Chicago, IL, and Annunciation Church in Memphis, TN.  He completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Hellenic College in 1976, completed course work for a Masters of Arts degree in Religious Studies from the University of Denver in 1977, and was awarded a Masters of Divinity degree from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Theological School in 1980. He has completed course work for a Doctor of Education (Ed. D.) at Loyola University of Chicago. 

On 6 January 1989, Fr. Gianulis was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Chaplain Corps, United States Naval Reserve.  As a drilling reservist, he was assigned to the Marine Expeditionary Force Religious Unit (MEFREL 107) and later Chaplain to Marine Air Group 43.  LT Gianulis acceded to active duty in September 1994 and assigned to Marine Combat Development Command, Quantico, Va., and assigned as Chaplain of Headquarters and Service Battalion, and later Chaplain of The Basic School.  While there, he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander.  He reported to the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) on 15 October 1997 as Staff Chaplain.  He is a Truman “plank owner.”  Chaplain Gianulis reported to Naval Training Center Great Lakes and on June 5, 2000 as Recruit Training Command Chaplain. After attending the Senior Leadership Training Course in Newport, RI, he reported to Carrier Air Wing THREE in June 2003, embarked in the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) in support of OIF.  During that tour, he was promoted to Commander. On 1 July 2005, CDR Gianulis reported as Command Chaplain of the USS IWO JIMA (LHD-7).  USS IWO JIMA was the command center of operations for Joint Task Force Katrina/Rita, deployed in 2006 in support of OEF, and was the command ship in Joint Task Force Lebanon evacuation of U.S. citizens. CDR Gianulis served as Command Chaplain of 1st Marine Aircraft Wing from August 2007 to August 2009.  He was promoted in June 2010 to the rank of Captain.

His personal awards include two Meritorious Service Medals, a Joint Service Commendation Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Fleet Marine Force Service Medal and two Humanitarian Service Medals.

His work with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America includes the following: Orthodox Christian Mission Center Board of Trustees from 1993-2003 (he led a Mission Team to Kasikisi, Tanzania, which constructed a parochial school for the village; Board of Directors of Hellenic College/Holy Cross School of Theology from 1990-91; Roman Catholic-Greek Orthodox Dialogue Commission for the Diocese of Chicago, 1990-91.
