MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – A member of Headquarters and Support Battalion adds trash to a growing pile during the battalion’s Earth Day/Area Clean-up Run held April 25 aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. Service members with the battalion ran through the base’s Mainside area collecting trash and debris in observance of Earth Day. “(Headquarters and Support Battalion) picked up a lot of trash,” said Lt. Col. Harry L. Gardner, commanding officer of Headquarters and Support Battalion. While some trash collected was due to littering, some of it was displaced from area dumpsters due to strong winds, he added. “You helped better the environment. This is our base. We need to make sure we are working and living in a clean base. (Camp Lejeune) leads the way when it comes to protecting the environment.” Various environmental programs throughout the base were recently recognized by the Secretary of the Navy and the Secretary of Defense for their efforts in protecting the environment.
