Hunting

 

General Hunting Requirements

All North Carolina State Laws and Regulations pertaining to hunting, as well as applicable federal laws and regulations, and MCIEAST-MCB CAMLEJ Order 5090.115B apply while hunting on Camp Lejeune.

Authorized personnel to hunt on Camp Lejeune: Military personnel (active duty, retired, and reservist), Department of Defense and Non-Appropriated Fund civilian employees (and retired employees) of MCB Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River, dependents and all civilians if sponsored by an authorized person.

Persons Authorized To Sponsor A Guest Hunter on Camp Lejeune: Military personnel (active duty, retired, and reservist on active duty) and Department of Defense and Non-appropriated Fund civilian employees (and retired employees) of MCB Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River. Personnel who sponsor others are responsible for their conduct, safety, and supervision while the sponsored person is hunting. The sponsor must remain in the same hunting area as the sponsored person. Both parties must be in possession of a valid Base Hunting Permit and State Hunting License. Authorized persons under 16 years of age are required to obtain a base hunting permit (free), a NC Hunting License, and big game tags (if appropriate).  Persons under the age of 18 will be allowed to hunt only when under immediate control or direct supervision of their licensed parent or guardian.

All persons authorized to hunt on Camp Lejeune must have in their possession a valid Base Hunting Permit and North Carolina State Hunting License. Base Hunting Permits will only be issued after satisfying the North Carolina “Hunter Safety Course” requirements to obtain a state hunting license, and obtaining a passing score on the Base Hunter Safety Test.

Areas available for hunting are assigned by the Range Control Office. Areas open for hunting will be posted daily on RecAccess website.

Area clearance must be obtained from the Base Game Warden Office prior to and immediately following the hunter going to or coming from designated hunting area. Area clearance can be obtained at buildings.

  • SAW-402 (Old Sawmill Road)
  • VL-1 (Verona Loop/Sandy Run areas)
  •  AS-4311 (MCAS New River)

An international orange torso vest and cap must be worn at all times while hunting, except for those engaged in waterfowl, wild turkey, dove, and/or bow hunting.

All motor vehicle travel to and from hunting sites must be in accordance with the Base Off-Road Recreational Vehicle Order (MCIEAST-MCB CAMLEJ Order 5090.111).

Vehicles are not allowed in areas designated as habitation for the Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers. These areas are marked with white bandings at the base of the trees.

 

 

General Weapons Requirements

Possession and use of firearms must comply with Base Order 5500.1 Ch. 1

Hunting with firearms is restricted to breech or muzzle-loading shotguns, 10 gauge or smaller shotgun, muzzle-loading rifles of .40 caliber or larger, or bow and arrow. No other firearms are authorized for use aboard the Base. Buckshot may not be used or possessed in any hunting area, except for those personnel participating in organized hunts. Firearms MAY NOT BE TRANSPORTED LOADED!

Organized hunts are restricted from using muzzle-loading firearms.

When hunting migratory birds, shotguns must be restricted to holding three rounds. If hunting over water, steel shot must be used.

Waterfowl may not be hunted on Sundays on the base.

Spring turkey hunters are authorized to use shotguns and archery equipment. Shot size is restricted to #4 or smaller and must be specifically manufactured for turkey hunting.
