Guidelines for Archaeologists

The Secretary of the Interior’s (SOI) Standards and Guidelines as defined in 36 CFR Part 61 set the minimum education and experience required for an individual to perform identification, evaluation, registration, and treatment of cultural resources at the federal level. National Park Service (NPS) guidelines and regulations for archaeology can be found at http://www.nps.gov/archeology/. The NPS also provides information on archaeology laws and ethics , information for educators on how to bring archaeology into the classroom , and a special section for kids to learn more about archaeology .

Each state has individual requirements for the treatment, survey, and reporting of cultural resources.
