Camp Lejeune brought enormous residential growth to the Jacksonville area. Before the construction of Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville had a population of 873. In 1950, its population had risen to 3,960 and by 1960, it reached 13,491, nearly 70% of which were Marines (Berger 2006: 67; Watson 1995:106).
