MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Traveling from near and far, both past and present 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion Marines gathered at the battalion headquarters building to witness a rededication of the unit’s memorial, June 27.

Members of the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion Association, comprised of former 2nd Recon Marines, were present at the rededication to show their support.

“We are honored to have Recon Marines both past and present here today,” said Sgt. Maj. Garritt Duncan, 2nd Recon sergeant major. “We are here to rededicate our memorial and to our Marines who gave the ultimate sacrifice.”

The ceremony included the recognition of Marines for their exemplary performance in their duties, a pinning ceremony for a Marine receiving his jump wings, and the presentation of the noncommissioned officer sword and knives to Marines selected for their superior leadership abilities.

Afterward, Marines and veterans enjoyed food and static displays.
The event also gave the opportunity for the Marines to gather with Marines senior to them to share experiences and appreciate a common bond.

“This memorial keeps the memory of our fallen Marines from Beirut to today, alive,” said Lt. Col. Daniel O’connor, 2nd Recon commanding officer. “It gives context to the names of the Marines who gave the ultimate sacrifice and shows who they were, what they did and why they died.”
