MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C --

For teens looking to make the most of their spring break, Marine Corps Community Services’ Outdoor Adventures is hosting a teen camp aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, April 15-17.

“The camp is the first of its kind for MCCS, offering teens an opportunity to try new activities before the summer months hit,” said Marybeth LeMaire, supervisor recreational specialist for Outdoor Adventures.

According to Page Durflinger, recreational assistant at Outdoor Adventures, the camp includes kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking and archery. Teens who attend will learn skills they can use long after the camp is over.

“(The camp will give) kids the opportunity to take part in outdoor activities they can do with others their own age,” said LeMaire.

The event is part of Outdoor Adventures’ effort to get more patrons staying active and getting outside.

“Our goal is to reconnect (participants) with the outdoors and kick start their summer,” said Durflinger.

During the camp, participants will learn how to shoot a bow. They will paddle their way through the waters of Camp Lejeune, navigate over obstacles on mountain bikes and learn rock climbing positions, grips and etiquette. Safety procedures for each activity will also be practiced.

No previous experience is necessary, making the camp accessible to all skill levels.

The Outdoor Adventures Teen Camp is available to authorized patrons 12 to 16 years old. Those with military affiliation may sponsor up to three teens who do not have military access.

Registration is open until April 9. Participants can register at the Outdoor Adventures office from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Participation in the event is $60 and covers all costs including equipment use.
