Hurricane Ian is continuing to approach the South Carolina coast. Although there are no major changes in our impacts, the biggest concern is flooding. Hurricane Ian will move north of the Southeast through tonight moving over the Carolinas today into Saturday. Regardless of the exact track of Ian, there is the potential for extensive impacts to eastern North Carolina.
Heavy rain bands will bring widespread rainfall amounts of 3 to 4 inches, with locally higher amounts, bringing the threat of localized flooding, especially in low-lying, urban, and poor drainage areas. Life-threatening storm surge inundation of 2 to 4 feet above ground is possible along much of the coast, with greatest confidence in inundation values approaching 4 feet along the lower Neuse River. Winds approaching tropical storm force could lead to some downed trees and isolated power outages. Tornadoes may result in areas of locally enhanced damage.
Dangerous marine conditions are expected for all offshore waters and the Pamlico Sound, with strong winds and seas building to create treacherous conditions for mariners. Stronger and more frequent rip currents will also exist along area beaches.
All MCIEAST components, tenants, and community members are advised to take the necessary precautions now in advance of weather effects from Ian and as always, monitor the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center forecasts and follow the advice they offer.
Reporting and Base Impacts
The base is currently experiencing reduced operations out of an abundance of caution due to Hurricane Ian. Please call your respective supervisor or chain of command for details on reporting.
Installation Child Development Centers, some Marine Marts and MCB Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River Exchanges are open.
All other MCCS facilities will remain closed. Marine Marts at Camp Geiger, Courthouse Bay, Verona Loop, Onslow Beach, Central and MAG 29 will remain closed. For updates, visit https://lejeunenewriver.usmc-mccs.org/
The commissary on MCB Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River is open, but will close at 5 p.m.
The military housing office is closed.
Onslow Beach Bridge is closed due to high winds.
All mess halls are open.
