MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Marines, Sailors and their families celebrated Easter with a sunrise service at the 2nd Marine Logistics Group amphitheater on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, April 1.
To believers, the sunrise symbolized Jesus’ resurrection; and as a chilly wind blew across the New River shoreline, worshipers began to sing.
“We had a gathering of about 120 people who came to worship,” said Lt. Mercedes Speller, deputy director, CREDO Camp Lejeune. “We were lead in worship by the Tarawa Terrance Chapel priest team and Chaplain Alvis was our preacher of the evening.”
The opening prayer was followed by songs, then the service moved to the meaning of Easter service and its significance.
“They tried to put him in the grave and they couldn’t hold him,” said Hedges. “This is the most important day of the year if you’re a Christian. To believers it’s a pivotal point in Christianity.”
At the end of the service, attendees intermingled and drank coffee to warm themselves, while some expressed their appreciation for the Sunrise Service.
“A couple of attendees come up to me and thanked me for doing this every year,” said Hedges. “This one guy said he’s brought his son to the service ever since he was born.”
