Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune welcomed the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles and their full service RV during a ceremony on base, April 3.The full-service RV is now open to assist in distributing REAL IDs to members of the installation. By October 2020, it will be a requirement to have a REAL ID.
“Following the 9/11 attacks Congress passed the REAL ID act that requires each state to issue identification that meets a higher security standard,” said Torre Jessup, DMV Commissioner. “The real ID is a single form of identification for entering security check points, airports and federal facilities including military installations.”

As of now, service members and their dependents, as well as retirees and civilian service employees, will be able to obtain a North Carolina REAL ID at the DMV RV, located at Hadnot Point Plaza parking lot near the corner of Holcomb Blvd. and Molly Pitcher Drive. Appointments are required and will be available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the first full week of each month from 8 - 11 a.m. and noon - 5 p.m. Appointments should take approximately 20 minutes and can be scheduled online here.

“Having the DMV mobile office here offers you the convenience to obtain your real ID without leaving base,” said Jessup.

“All you have to do is make an appointment and bring in the appropriate credentials or documents to support your application.”

The RV being on base means military members can spend more time focused on their missions instead of waiting at the DMV. “Readiness is foremost in the minds of Marines and as a base we, facilitate the readiness for our operations,” said Col. Michael Scalise, deputy commander, MCB Camp Lejeune. “By bringing this aboard the base, it is one thing that you can take off the list where you don’t have to stand in line for out in town.”
The cost for a REAL ID is the same as a regular or duplicate driver license or ID. However, if you already have a valid driver’s license or ID and want to upgrade to a REAL ID, the fee is $13. All fees can be paid via cash, check, and credit or debit card. For more information on fees, visit www.ncdot.gov/dmv/fees.
After you have submitted your documentation, taken a new photo and paid the fee, your REAL ID will be mailed to you in approximately 15-20 days.
For more information on how to obtain a North Carolina REAL ID or the required documents to begin the process, please visit www.ncrealid.gov. For more information on REAL ID for other states and territories, secondary identification and the REAL ID Act of 2005, visit www.dhs.gov/real-id.
“We are glad to work with Camp Lejeune to offer this service,” said Jessup. “This mobile office is here to serve Marines and their family members to make sure they get their REAL IDs.”

The REAL ID Act does not affect Marine Corps installation access for individuals who already possess an approved-access credential, i.e. DoD ID card, dependent identification card, military retiree card, MCESS credential, or RAPIDGate credential.
