Recent changes have come to traffic regulations aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
The goal is to ensure drivers are following all laws and regulations, as well as making sure their information is updated and valid with the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.
Previous incidents on and off-base have led to policy changes giving more responsibility to Marines.
“There have been Marines who have usually had their vehicles towed and license plate taken,” said Lt. Col. Bryan T. Horvath, the magistrate of Marine Corps Installations East. “Usually when you switch insurance carriers, the company doesn’t contact the DMV for you to update your information. It’s your responsibility to call and ensure your paperwork is good to go. You may have valid insurance, but if it isn’t updated in the system, it will be a problem when you get pulled over.”
We hope to bring risky habits to light with these new policies, said Horvath. Local law enforcement shares information with us and we’re trying to be proactive about it, not reactive.
Base officials hope to combat reckless driving by giving staff-noncommissioned officers and commissioned officers the authority to report dangerous drivers as a third-party ticket.
Leaders who issue third party tickets will be expected to report to the associated court date.
“The third-party ticket system gives select Marines the opportunity to help stop reckless drivers,” said Master Sgt. Frank Scott, the operations chief of the commanding general inspector’s section of Marine Corps Installations East.”
Select members, families and civilian employees are also obligated to report any off-base citations they have received.
“Marines are held to a higher standard,” said Scott. “You’re still a Marine on or off-base. It’s important to be safe and responsible when traveling.”
Due to reduced manpower, traffic court hours are now 8 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
